Kitchen Sponges: The very grossest and bacteria filled spot in your home is actually the sponge that you use in your kitchen or bathroom for cleaning. The sponge in most peoples kitchen sits on the counter or sink and when there are dishes to do you grab it and scrub away. When you are done you set it back down and go about your business. Studies have found that sponges in homes can hold mold, mildew, bacteria and even staph. You want to make sure that you change out your sponge every few weeks and ring it out after you rinse in warm water after use. You can zap it in the microwave at the end of the day to help kill any bacteria that might be growing.
Kitchen Sink: The next space that you need to look at is the kitchen sink. The sink is full of your dirty dishes that you use to cook and eat. That is often left in a sink for hours and then you go over and rinse them off or clean them. When the sinks were studied to see what was there they found that over 45% of them were full of bacteria. The bacteria can be taken care of if you wash the sides and the bottom of the sink on a regular basis. It is also a good idea to use a tablespoon of bleach down the drain to help clean the parts that you cannot clean otherwise.
Toothbrush Holder: Yes you heard that right! The place that you store your toothbrush on a regular basis is full of all sorts of bacteria. There is a good reason and it is because of the location of the item. The toothbrush holder is usually left near the toilet and when you use the restroom and flush there are particles that are blown into the air! This all has to land somewhere and your toothbrush holder is a great stop. You want to make sure that you thoroughly clean the toothbrush holder when you scrub your bathroom.
