Let’s face it, construction is a messy business. All you want to do after any renovation is to sit back and enjoy the new look. But there’s something standing in the way; the clean-up. Layers of dust will leave your new renovation looking dirty.
Final Post Construction Cleaning Checklist
1. Vacuum– Dust and particles of dirt can easily embed themselves in upholstered furniture, carpets and drapes so it’s a good idea to remove them before they have a chance to settle. If this happens it can result in a dirty look and dust and dirt particles can also make you itch and be irritating for those that come to visit, not to mention your family. All soft surfaces should be vacuumed and pay attention to small details. It’s a good idea to remove all the cushions from the couch and vacuum each of them and don’t forget about the frames of the couch. If you think it’s still dusty then go over it again.
2. Wipe hard surfaces– All surfaces need to be cleaned from top to bottom. The walls will collect dust, so they need to be wiped. Dry dust to prevent any damage to the wall because particles on the wall can scratch if you’re not careful. Use a damp cloth if the texture and paint finish of your wall can stand a little bit of abuse. Test a small area if you’re unsure to see what happen with a damp cloth. Next are the moldings and cabinets that also like to hang on to dust. Use a duster on them and then so the same on the inside of the cabinets. Then move on to the counters and other flat surfaces that the dust you’ve just cleaned has fallen onto. Finally move on to the floor and sweep any visible dust and then mop from wall to wall.
3. Air vents & filters– When renovations are done it means dust and debris is everywhere and will make its way into the vents. It won’t matter if you only did one area either, so you’ll need to make sure that you clean the air vents and replace the air filters when construction is complete. This will limit the amount of dust that will spread to the rest of the house. Air vent covers should be removed and cleaned with soap and water and then should dry completely before putting them back. Don’t skip this step or you may have dusty air causing allergies and respiratory issues for those in the home.
4. Often forgotten items– To ensure a dust-free environment after construction then don’t forget items that are often overlooked. These include light fixtures, lamp shades, ceiling fan blades, small appliances, electronics and decorative items all need to be cleaned.
